We are so in love with Mauritius that we cannot quite leave just yet. After celebrating the National Day yesterday, today we are checking into a room with a view, Suite Villa 217at Shanti Maurice.
On the south coast of Mauritius, Shanti Maurice plays host to one of the most splendid rooms with a view you can ever experience: the thatch-roofed Suite Villa 217, one of the 61 suites and villas spread across the 15-hectare resort. Through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the main living room and dining area is a spacious private deck and 54-square-foot infinity pool.
Inside, the living room is decked out in natural materials such as local hardwood and lava stone, and features a small lounge, a dining table laden with fresh tropical fruit and a flat-screen TV. A small alcove to the left houses the minibar, stocked with all the usual suspects, and a Nespresso machine.
Two bedrooms off to either side of the main room are decorated in the same earthy palate, with Tiffany-blue accents and individual bathrooms. This type of accommodation is ideal for families and groups, but my companion and I are happy to stretch out across the 500 square metres of space.
The adjoining bathroom features an invitingly deep bathtub (with a mini flat-screen TV set into the wall in front), a double sink, and a shower and toilet housed in individual frosted glass cubicles. For those who'd prefer a closer encounter with nature, there’s also a spectacular outdoor rain shower.
Outside the temperature-controlled pool has a built-in Jacuzzi, perfect for a midnight dip, while the enclosed courtyard and garden pavilion are ideal spots for al fresco dining.
If you can be bothered to leave this spectacular suite long enough, the resort has plenty on offer. For ultimate r&r, book a treatment at Nira Spa, the biggest in the Indian Ocean. Foodies can partake in the hotel’s Grandma’s Kitchen program, where you’ll dine at the home of one of the staff members’ grandmothers. If you wish, you can visit Blue Bay Marine Park to the east and the capital of Port Louis to the north, only a short drive away.
Sea views, space and solitude are the bywords for Shanti Maurice, and here you're bound to find all three in abundance at this dreamy island hideaway.
