She watches over New York City day and night, yes you’ve got it it’s the Statue of Liberty. Probabyly the most famous thing in the city, The Statue of Liberty was conceived in 1865 by French intellectual Edouard Laboulaye as a monument to the republican principals shared by France and the USA. Then French sculptor Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi traveled to New York in 1871 to pick the site and spent more than ten years in Paris designing and making the 151ft-tall figure. It was later shipped to New York City and placed on a small island in the harbour, where it was unveiled in 1886.
The crown is open to the public but due to limited capacity, reservations are required as far in advance as possible. Those who do not want to make a reservation can still visit the statue and enjoy the view from the 16-story observation deck. There is also a specially designed glass ceiling that allows you to look up into the statues amazing interior.
The Empire State Building is not only one of the most famous buildings in the New York City Skyline, but it has also been featured in countless Hollywood films over the years. This limestone classic was built in just 410days at a phenomenal cost of $41 million. Located on the site of the original Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, the 102-story, 1472ft-high Empire State Building opened its doors in 1931.
The view from the Empire State Building will leave you speechless, queues to get to the observation decks however will be very long but definitely worth the wait, as once up there you can stay as long as you like and zoom in on the city through coin-operated telescopes. We recommend going during sunset or a night as you get the most magical view of the city.
Just like the Empire State Building this station has been features in more films and TV programmes than we can count. Completed in 1913, Grand Central Station is one of the most beautifully crafted Beaux Arts buildings in New York. One of our favourite features would have to be the vaulted ceiling bearing a mural of the constellations streaming across it (backwards) as well as the 75ft-high, glass-encased catwalks. This wonderful building has been making train travel romantic for the longest time and will continue to do so as it remains an architectural beauty.
The National September 11 Museum and Memorial is finally open to the public, inside the Memorial's two massive reflecting pools pay tribute to the thousands who lost their lives on that fateful fall day in 2001. Beside the pools stands the state-of-the-art Memorial Museum, a solemn space where inside the events and consequences of that day are documented.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art also known as ‘The Met’ was founded in 1870 and has one of the biggest art collections in the whole world. The museum has an astonishing 17 acres of galleries and attracts almost six million visitors a year- making it the largest single-site attraction in New York City. If you’re big on ancient Egyptian art then you will be rendered speechless when you see the museum’s collection some which dates back to the Paleolithic era.
The roof garden is one the best spots in the entire museum and features rotating sculpture installations by contemporary and 20th century artists. However, nothing compares to the views it offers of the city and Central Park.
Experience the calmer side to New York City in Central Park, an 843-acre rectangle of open space in the middle of Manhattan. Created in the 1860s and ’70s by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, the enormous park was designed as a leisure space for all New Yorkers, regardless of colour, class or creed. The lush laws, beautiful flowering gardens and wooded paths provides New Yorkers with the timeout and peace they need.
